Lead Sheet

Lead Sheet has historically been used for waterproofing and often for covering circular structures. With the advancement of science, the X-ray tube was discovered in 1894 by Wilhelm C. Roentgen. Following the introduction of X-ray machines, rooms where these devices were installed began to be shielded with lead sheets to prevent environmental and biological harm.

The reasons for using lead sheets include their high density, durability without structural degradation over many years, and superior radiation resistance.

Lead Sheet is used as a shield for radiation protection in X-ray rooms. High-purity lead provides better radiation shielding than standard lead. Pre-production and post-production spectral analyses are conducted to ensure lead purity. In Turkey, post-shielding control authority belongs to the NDK. Using lead that complies with the standards set by the NDK ensures a smooth licensing process for your project.

Lead Sheet is produced by melting pure lead ingots at 450°C, casting them into molds, and then rolling them (rolling press process). After rolling, the lead is cut into desired dimensions using guillotine cutting to form lead sheets. During production, samples are taken from induction furnaces for each pot cast to check the purity level.

Lead sheets are used in a variety of applications, from exterior cladding in buildings to cable manufacturing. Our lead sheets are produced with high purity and to the highest standards in compliance with radiation insulation and safety regulations.

Lead is internationally recognized as the ideal shielding material for radiation protection. A significant portion of our production is exported, and our products are manufactured to European standards (CE). Annual standard inspections are conducted, and our certifications are renewed every year.

In the field of radiation safety, we have three companies within our group providing product manufacturing and domestic and international project consultancy. With our expert team, we serve in many countries in radiation protection.

"Lead sheets with higher purity levels provide significantly better radiation resistance compared to standard lead sheets."

What is the Ideal Thickness for Using Lead Sheets?

The thickness of lead sheets is determined according to the shielding thickness required by the authorized energy agency (TAEK in Turkey). If you do not have a lead shielding report from TAEK, our engineers will conduct on-site and project-based measurements. During this process, factors such as the device used in the room to be shielded, the architectural and physical structure of the room, and its distance from living spaces are optimized to determine the appropriate lead thickness.

Lead sheets are used as a shield against radiation. Appropriate thicknesses are determined to insulate interior and exterior areas from radiation. If desired, lead sheets can be pressed with a drywall and antibacterial laminate to produce gypsum panels or wooden panels. We do not recommend classic screw mounting methods for installing lead sheets. If screws are to be used, lead washers should be obtained from our company to cap the screws.

Lead sheets are delivered individually packaged, labeled with content and product codes, and should be handled with protective equipment during installation.

Lead Applications and Features

Lead is a widely used metal. In Turkey, it is primarily extracted from the Eastern Anatolia region, while globally, the United States and Russia stand out as leading producers with large reserves. Lead recycling rates are high, and in Turkey, lead from scrap is also used extensively in various applications.

Lead can be used in many areas. For example, it is a crucial roofing material. Additionally, it is a quality antibacterial product. This element is also used for sound insulation and can be combined with other metals to form alloys. It is preferred in hospitals as it blocks radiation. Lead sheets intended for radiation insulation must be of high purity. Lead sheets used for security and project licensing leakage reports must be of top quality in compliance with international standards.

Forms of Lead Usage

The forms of lead usage vary depending on the purpose. For example, lead ingots are generally preferred in the industrial and maritime sectors, while lead sheets are more commonly used in the healthcare sector for shielding X-ray rooms. The production methods align with the areas of use. For instance, lead used as a radiation barrier can be produced in brick form to provide high radiation resistance. Lead is also preferred in various areas due to its effectiveness in shielding against X-rays.

In Turkey, lead products are used in various applications. For example, they can be used in mosques. Additionally, this material is preferred in construction and even in batteries. Our company is a major manufacturer and exporter of lead products. Lead sheet usage varies in dimensions and thickness.

Applications of Lead Sheets

The primary application of lead sheets is in the healthcare sector. Their widespread use in this field is to meet customer expectations for radiation absorption. Special lead sheets are produced by manufacturers to prevent harm to children and pregnant women, particularly during the absorption of X-rays and in radiological imaging techniques.

You can review the Lead Sheet Wall Mounting Scheme to calculate the required amount of lead.

Specifications of Lead Sheets for X-Ray Room Shielding

* Lead sheets must be manufactured at a high purity level.
* The purity level must meet a minimum of 99.98%.
* Shielding calculations must be based on pure lead, and the shielding thickness must ensure the required value using lead sheets made from pure lead ingots.
* Lead sheets must be produced in rolls of 60cmx200cm/240cm or 50cmx200cm/240cm, depending on the profile distance suitable for wall shielding. (European standard – due to lead being a heavy metal, this is a requirement for occupational health and safety.)
* Each sheet must be labeled with its dimensions and weight.

For thicker lead sheets, it is possible to use them by laminating layers. For shields thicker than 8mm, we also produce lead bricks. You can adhere lead sheets together using lead adhesive for lead coating applications.
